MANKATO —
Mankato’s $12 million request for a civic center expansion does not appear to have made it into the bonding bill being considered as part of a state budget compromise.
“There was some back and forth on it but I guess in the end there seems to be resistance, not so much from the governor’s office,” City Manager Pat Hentges said. “There was stronger resistance in the House to it.”
The full bonding bill list was not published Tuesday evening, but Hentges said he learned Mankato’s request would not be in it.
The request had been vetoed by former Gov. Tim Pawlenty the last three times it has been in the bonding bill.
The City Council had previously approved a $14.5 million request to be included in next year’s bonding bill. The expansion would add meeting room space and include hockey upgrades to the arena in Verizon Wireless Center as well as All Seasons Arena.
Requests by St. Cloud and Rochester for civic center money were also denied, Hentges said.
