Mav women shut down St. Cloud 4-0

MANKATO — Four different players scored goals for Minnesota State Sunday as the women’s hockey team avenged a 6-1 loss to St. Cloud State on Friday with a 4-0 shutout at All Seasons Arena on Sunday.

Kala Buganski scored the only goal MSU needed at 9:30 of the opening period. Her short-handed tally was unassisted and the 1-0 lead held up until the first break.

In the second period, MSU’s Ariel Mackley found the net on a power play and Moira O’Connor scored an even-strength goal. The Mavericks’ Emmi Leinonen capped the game’s scoring with a power-play goal at 4:55 of the third.

Christina Lee finished the game with three assists. Leinonen and O’Connor had one assist apiece.

St. Cloud goalie Ashley Nixon faced 30 shots and made 26 saves. MSU’s Alli Altmann turned back all 33 shots she faced.

MSU improves to 5-18-5 overall and 3-16-5-3 in the WCHA.

The Mavericks are back in action at 2:07 p.m. Friday when they begin a two-game series at Madison, Wis., against the University of Wisconsin.
