CROOKSTON —
The Minnesota State football team forced four turnovers highlighted by Jesse Hamilton’s 25-yard fumble return as the No. 16 Mavericks cruised past Minnesota-Crookston 42-3 Saturday.
MSU led 14-0 at halftime but the Mavericks scored three touchdowns in the third quarter and one in the fourth on consecutive possessions to complete the rout of their Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference opponent.
MSU quarterback Will Brogan completed 19 passes for 263 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Leading receiver Cody Rose (92 yards) caught one of the touchdowns and Adam Thelen’s only catch was a 40-yard TD. Brogan hooked up with Rose for a 6-yard touchdown pass on the game’s opening drive.
Taylor Brookins led the MSU rushing attack with 70 yards and a touchdown. Chris Echols added two rushing touchdowns to go with his 56 yards on the ground.
The Mavericks finished with 573 yards of total offense compared to UMC’s 216. David Anderson led the Eagles offense with 98 yards rushing but the Mavericks held UMC quarterback Josh Perea to just 49 yards.
Matt McQuiston led MSU with 10 tackles and forced the fumble on Hamilton’s touchdown. Hamilton also had an interception that he returned for 22 yards. Derrick Jacobs and Simon Cholometes each intercepted passes for MSU.
UMC’s lone score came on a 24-yard field goal by Chris Secrest on the Eagles opening drive of the second half. MSU’s Brookins scored on the next possession to put the Mavericks ahead by 18.
Echols scored with 43 seconds remaining in the third quarter and Thelen scored 40 seconds later. Echols added another TD five minutes into the fourth quarter.
The 16th-ranked Mavericks (3-0, 2-0 NSIC) open their NSIC South Division schedule against Concordia-St. Paul at 6 p.m. Saturday at Blakeslee Stadium.
