ABERDEEN, S.D. —
Sophomore quarterback Will Brogan threw three touchdown passes on Saturday to lead the 18th-ranked Minnesota State football team to a 21-14 victory over Northern State in its Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference opener.
Brogan was 10 of 24 passing for 207 yards and threw two touchdown passes to sophomore wideout Adam Thielen. His second score was a 71-yard play that broke a 14-14 tie early in the fourth quarter.
Thielen finished with seven catches for 71 yards.
Big plays were the story of the day, as sophomore receiver Cody Rose broke a scoreless tie in the second quarter with a 60-yard catch and run for a touchdown. Sophomore kicker Sam Brockshus made the first of his three PATs to make it 7-0.
“I thought the offense did fine,” Mavericks coach Todd Hoffner said. “We left a lot of points on the field today, and we’ll have to get better with that. We didn’t turn the ball over today, so that is great, and I am very proud of our players’ efforts.”
Northern State answered on the ensuing drive when Montrel Richardson scored on a 47-yard run. Thomas Parrott’s kick tied the game 7-7, which was the halftime score.
In the third quarter, the Mavericks took a 14-7 lead when Brogan found Thielen on a 9-yard touchdown pass that capped an eight-play 80-yard drive.
Northern answered with its own 13-play, 56-yard drive, ending with Nick Wanner found Mark Hanley on a 3-yard scoring strike.
The game didn’t stay tied for long however, Thielen hauled in his long catch on the next offensive play.
Junior running back Taylor Brookins led MSU with eight carries for 39 yards on the ground. Senior linebacker Matt McQuiston led the way defensively with 11 tackles.
Minnesota State (2-0) continues NSIC play on Saturday when it travels to Minnesota-Crookston.
