Our View: Good habits gone right

Lindsay Becker, Mankato
Free Press Staff Writer

— As we head full speed toward spring, New Year’s resolutions to improve health are often long forgotten by now — or were never fully formed in the first place.

But it’s not something to be embarrassed about. It’s just something to change. The goal, every health and nutrition expert will tell you, is to make healthful choices a way of life, not an annual New Year’s resolution.

Luckily, there are plenty of role models and help available in the Mankato area to get you on the right track. And we found some of those people.

Today’s Progress 2010 section, which begins on Page C1, offers a sampling of people and programs that focus on health, nutrition and fitness.

It’s clear there are many ways to find a way to fitness. The owner of a consulting company discovered tae kwon do was his key to good health. A cycling instructor inspired even a journalist to perspire. A Mankato woman has lost more than 50 pounds by adapting a new way of living, including better eating and more exercise. And schools, too, are doing their part in trying to teach children early how to eat right by introducing healthier food into school lunch programs.

None of the good habits or programs or expertise is a brand-new or expensive concept, and that’s what makes them accessible to everyone.

Other Progress 2010 special sections, publishing March 15, 22 and 29, will focus on retail and hospitality, education and careers, and nonprofits and churches.
