Season prep: Govenaires hosting rehearsals, announce 2013 production

The St. Peter Govenaires Drum and Bugle Corps is hosting auditions on Saturday and Sunday at St. Peter High School.

Musicians should try to attend rehearsals on both days: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. There is a break for lunch, but no meals are provided. There are no auditions, and musicians and color guard performers of all backgrounds are invited to attend.

Last year, the southern Minnesota ensemble capped its 85th anniversary by finishing second in Class A at the Drum Corps Associates (DCA) championships in Annapolis, Md. Since then, the Govenaires staff has worked during the off-season to produce another stellar show. This includes bringing in new percussion staff members, which includes Mike Mayer (caption head) and Joel Matuzak (percussion arranger).

The Govenaires’ 2013 production is titled “Chasing Hollywood.”

The production begins with the “Prologue” from Cy Coleman’s “City of Angels,’ a fast-paced number that sends listeners through the rat-race of trying to “make it.” Then, “Sparkling Diamonds” from the movie musical “Moulin Rouge” celebrates the rewards of fame.

Other selections include “Sunset Boulevard” and the gorgeous ballad “Send in the Clowns” by Stephan Sondheim.

The corps closes with “Don’t Rain on my Parade” from the musical “Funny Girl.”

Founded in 1927, the Govenaires are three-time Drum Corps Associates (DCA) Class A champions. The St. Peter-based ensemble performs throughout Minnesota in parades and field shows, including the Drum Corps International (DCI) regional championships at the University of Minnesota’s TCF Bank Stadium. This season will culminate Labor Day, at the DCA championships in Annapolis, Md.
