Though the Mankato Symphony Orchestra’s performance season doesn’t begin until November, members have plenty to do.
MSO kicks off its three-city “From the Heart” tour in Morton on Sept. 16. Following are performances in New Ulm and Blue Earth.
The concert includes two time-honored masterpieces: “Overture to Candide” by Leonard Bernstein, and “New World Symphony” by Antonin Dvorak. Audiences also will be treated to a special sneak preview of Michael Daugherty’s “Trail of Tears” about the forced removal of American Indians from their southeastern U.S. homelands in 1838-39.
Daugherty’s piece will be performed in its entirety for the first time in Mankato at the “To Be Certain of the Dawn” concert on Nov. 18, which also serves as the kickoff performance for the MSO’s 2012-13 season.
MSO is also hosting a concert on Sept. 22 in Mankato that features the Maza Kute drum group, cellist Sharon Rodgers and mezzo-soprano Eleda Blair. The concert is a continuation of the 2011 Dakota Music Tour and will be held in memory of the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862.
Now in its 62nd season, the Mankato Symphony Orchestra includes 80 amateur and professional musicians from the Greater Mankato and southern Minnesota regions. Music director and conductor Kenneth Freed has been with the MSO since 2006. He is also a violist with the Minnesota Orchestra.
