MANKATO — A Friday ribbon cutting and gathering of the Minnesota Supreme Court is set to kick off five days of grand-opening tours at the Justice Center, the largest project in Blue Earth County’s history.
The tours will be self-guided, public information officer Jessica Beyer said. Visitors will want to move at different speeds, and some may want to ask questions of county employees, who will be on hand to answer questions.
Each of 31 numbered stations along the route will have information.
Because cameras are prohibited on the tour, a photo company will be on hand to take and sell pictures of people who’d like to pose behind bars.
Continuing the Justice Center’s environmentally friendly theme, the tour materials, napkins and volunteers’ T-shirts will be made from recycled materials. Cookies and lemonade are planned for refreshments.
Mankato East student musicians will be playing during the ribbon cutting, which will also include talks by County Board Chairman Tom McLaughlin, Minnesota Supreme Court Chief Justice Eric Magnuson and Bryan Paulsen, whose firm helped design the facility.
Equipment from the sheriff’s department also will be on display.
Because of budgetary difficulties, the ceremony and tours have been pared down to focus on getting information to the public without unnecessary frills.
The first public tour of the Justice Center follows the ribbon cutting. Tours are scheduled for the following four days as well and vary by time to accommodate residents’ different schedules.
