Brainwave: Ice cream kaleidoscope

By Dorothy Schwartzkopf

As the seasons change and the weather

finally starts getting warmer, it seems that winter is finally over. And during those hot summer days that are full of sunshine, there is nothing better than kicking back and enjoying a nice big bowl of ice cream. Maybe it’s a chocolate cone or a homemade sundae with a variety of toppings. When it comes to ice cream, everyone has their own favorite.

This month, Brainwave asked area kids, “If you could invent a flavor of ice cream, of what would the ingredients consist and why?” As you can imagine, with so many possibilities, there was a huge variety of responses.

With so many toppings and flavors, it is hard to narrow it down to just a few. That’s why James Marti, a sixth-grader from Loyola, and Wesley Davis, an eighth-grader at Risen Savior Lutheran, wouldn’t eliminate anything. James’ creation would contain everything from sausage to perfume and would be called “Foodinator.” Wesley’s dessert would consist of “everything sweet in the world” and he insists, “Its sweetness would blow you away!”

Grace Hermer, a seventh-grader from Loyola, wanted an ice cream that would include her favorite candy. “It would be called ‘Starburst Sting.’ It would include a mixture of all the Starburst flavors and make your mouth sting with delight.” Tanner Mueller, a sixth-grader at Madelia, also liked the idea of using candy in ice cream. “My new flavor would be called Candy Monster. It would contain a ton of sugar and every candy and pop ever dreamed of.”

While ingredients are important in ice cream, sometimes a catchy name is all that’s needed to win a buyer over. Laura Caldwell, a fourth-grader at Maple River West, named her ice cream “Shamheart Boogie.” The ingredients would include green candy hearts and mint flavoring. Ashtin Johnson, a fourth-grader at All Saints Catholic School, had the same idea. “Lava is a new ice cream everyone knows about. It’s a wonderful mix of vanilla, caramel, melted chocolate and it is red!”

As far as I know, as of right now, ice cream doesn’t give you super powers, but, according to William Ware, a sixth-grader from Madelia Elementary, someday it will. “If I could invent a new flavor of ice cream it would be BAR B Q. It would give you super powers.”

Brianna Stevensen, also a sixth-grader from Madelia, agrees that ice cream could someday be magical. “If I could invent a new flavor of ice cream it would be called the ever-lasting ice cream. I would call it that because it would never melt no matter how hot it is.” This creation may change the future of ice cream.

When ice cream alone is not enough to keep you satisfied, maybe some tacos or bubble gum would help. Jessica Ruter, a sixth-grader from Madelia, would invent a flavor of ice cream called “The Taco.” “It would have vanilla ice cream and all the stuff that you would put on a taco like the shell, hamburger, lettuce, olives, cheese and sour cream.” Although this sounds delicious, Erica Anderson, a sixth-grader from JWP, thinks bubble gum ice cream would be better. “I would make it so it would taste just like regular bubble gum.”

With ideas ranging from creative ingredients to catchy names, I think it’s best said by Hannah Atkinson, a seventh-grader at Loyola, who has both. “(My ice cream) would consist of bananas, chocolate chips and chocolate syrup. It would be called “Go Bananas” because people will go bananas for this new delicious ice cream.”

Huge variety of flavors

Did you hear about the new ice cream flavor everyone is talking about? What? You don’t know about it? Well, it is called NuttyBuddy. NuttyBuddy? Yes, NuttyBuddy. What is it made of? It is made of chocolate ice cream and nuts covered with a strawberry glaze. It tastes like a banana split but better. If you want some, you better go buy some before it is out of stock.

If I could invent a new flavor of ice cream, it would be called Veggie Delite. The ingredients would consist of carrots, broccoli, celery, Brussels sprouts, spinach, lettuce, cauliflower and all veggies. Then it would have ranch, french and V8 on top of it.

I invented this flavor because it’s healthy. People would start to realize that sugar is unhealthy. Ice cream is just oils and sugar.

Maddy Dumke
age 11, grade 5
Immanuel Lutheran

My ice cream flavor would be Pop Rock Surprise, and the ingredients would be three cups of Pop Rocks added to a half gallon of vanilla ice cream.

Hannah Bradley
age 12, grade 6
Loyola

If I could invent an ice cream, I would invent an ice cream for dogs. What I would put in this ice cream is peanut butter, liver, ham and steak. There would also be crushed milk bone in the middle. Since dogs have very long tongues, ice cream should already be made for them. That’s why I would invent “Doggy Heaven” (the name of the ice cream).

Taylor Bode
age 13, grade 7
Trinity Lutheran

If I could invent a new flavor of ice cream, the ingredients would consist of ice, cream, mocha, chocolate, vanilla, banana, pickles, pizza, frosting and wood shavings on top. It wouldn’t be the most popular for all humans, but it would be the most popular for all woodpeckers and dogs. It would probably sell out too fast and then I would have to make more.

Jana Thormodson
age 11, grade 6
Madelia

If I could invent a new flavor, it would be Happy Ice Cream. The ice cream would have a magic taste to every bite you take. It would make you happy. When you order the Happy Ice Cream, your life will be easier. When you get the Happy Ice Cream, the waiters will put the money ice cream tree by you and, if you win, you will get any flavor of ice cream free for one month.

Chocolate and vanilla and cherry, oh my! How many different kinds of ice cream are there? Let’s just say that my hands would be very tired after naming just a fraction of them. It would be difficult to make a new flavor because there are already so many kinds that I probably am not even aware of. After thinking very hard and eating a bowl of ice cream, I have decided.

My new kind of ice cream would be called Rainbow Razzle. It’s similar to Neapolitan, but, instead of three flavors, there are five. The five flavors I would use are lemon (being yellow), strawberry (being red), orange dream (being orange) and watermelon (being green). All this with mixed-in colorful sprinkles would make this too pretty to eat! It’s also a good flavor of ice cream for those who cannot make up their mind due to the wide variety of fruity flavors. Rainbow Razzle would be the perfect addition to any ice cream shop, birthday party or must-have treats on a hot day.

Anyone who knows me is aware that I love to be colorful, so this ice cream flavor is almost a reflection of my personality as well as a fruity concoction. I think Rainbow Razzle would be a real hit. I know I’d eat it! That is what my own ice cream flavor would be.

If I could invent a new flavor of ice cream, it would be called Snow Cap. The reason it is called Snow Cap is because it stands for the ingredients. “S” is for strawberries. “N” is for nuts. “O” is for Oreos. “W” is for watermelon. “C” is for cherries. “A” is for apple slices. And “p” is for pomegranate juice. All those ingredients are mixed in with yummy mint ice cream. It would be served in a 6-inch around cone covered in frozen chocolate. Yum!

My first ingredient for Earth Day ice cream is mint ice cream because a lot of the Earth is green.

My next ingredient would be coconut shreds because Earth has grass.

Then I would add blueberries because Earth has lakes, rivers and oceans.

My last ingredient would be a few green marshmallows scattered over my ice cream because Earth has trees.

My new ice cream flavor would be chocolate chimp chaos. I would include ingredients such as chocolate syrup, caramel, chocolate chips, banana and whipped cream all in chocolate ice cream.

Devin Bjelland
age 13, grade 8
St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran

Asparagus ice cream is what I would make. People wouldn’t actually eat it, but it would be novel.

Paige Sowers
age 6, grade 1

If I could invent a new flavor of ice cream, it would be Oreo with chocolate bars with vanilla, and also with caramel. Because it would taste really good with the caramel.

Josie Borneke
age 9, grade 4

Incredible Ice Cream. Hi, I just finished making my new ice cream, Frozen Hockey. I named it Frozen Hockey because, once you take the first taste, blasts of different flavors fly into your mouth. It’s almost like a puck came at you and hit you but you swallowed it and it tasted wicked. Here are some ice cream flavors that make Frozen Hockey: Strong Strawberry, Blastin Berry, Kooky Coconut and Amazing Apple. Whipped all together with the most important ingredient ... but it’s a family recipe. So go to a hockey game and get Frozen Hockey! Bye! Motto: Hockey in a bottle!

I would make a spaghetti sundae. It would have spaghetti noodles, tomato sauce and cherries.

Adam Dickey
age 9, grade 4

If I could make a new kind of ice cream, it would be Minnesota Twins ice cream. It would have milk, blueberries and blue raspberries for one of the team colors, blue and red raspberries and strawberries for the other team color, red. That’s the kind of ice cream I’d make.

Tanner Klammer
age 6, grade K
Risen Savior Lutheran

I would put every treat in it because it would be delicious and I would share with everyone in the whole wide world.

Naomi Lopez
age 9, grade 3

If I could invent a new flavor of ice cream, it would be churo flavored with a little pina colada. Because I just love churos and pina coladas and ice cream, so this would probably be very yummy. And plus they have never even thought of putting churos with pina colada, so this would be my own flavor of ice cream. And it would be hot and cold because pina coladas are cold but churos are hot. And it would be very sweet. And they would finally have another flavor from Mexico besides chocolate. Now this is going to probably be the best ice cream in the world.

My ice cream is called Potato Ice Cream. The ingredients inside my Potato Ice Cream are potatoes, butter and a little tiny drop of hot sauce.

Beret Elker

If I could invent a new flavor of ice cream the ingredients would consist of Fruit Loops cereal with vanilla ice cream. It would also have Coco Pebbles and King Vitamin.

My ice cream would be a cereal kind of ice cream called Cereal Supreme.

Eric Westberg
age 11, grade 5

If I could create my own flavor of ice cream, I would make broccoli-flavored ice cream. Most people do not like broccoli. So, I would dye the broccoli red before I mixed it with vanilla ice cream. The ice cream will be red so your eyes confuse it with strawberry ice cream. It is the yummy way to get your vitamins and minerals! Moms and dads will like it as a healthy and delicious treat.

Riley Owen Davis
age 12, grade 7
Risen Savior Lutheran

I’d make an ice cream called Butternut Chocolate Explosion. It would have butter pecan and chocolate ice cream. It would have lots of gooey caramel in it. It would have many little chocolates in it with marshmallow too. It would also be plentiful with plethoras of peanut butter cups in it. It would be whatever you want it to be. It will have delicious, exceptionally satisfying s’mores in it. It would be such pure delight.

Kailey Michels
age 12, grade 6
Madelia

If I could invent a flavor of ice cream, I would want to invent the flavor “Vanilla Pancake.” The ingredients are vanilla ice cream bought from a store. Then, have someone cook some pancakes (like one or two of them). Break the pancakes into small pieces and let them cool down. What you need for “Vanilla Pancake” is vanilla ice cream, pancakes, a bowl or cup, a spoon and someone to eat it all.

I think “Vanilla Pancake” should be a kind of ice cream because no one has come up with it and told everybody in the world. I also think that a lot of people would eat “Vanilla Pancake” and really like it.

Payton Remiger
age 9, grade 3
Cleveland

I would mix all the ice cream flavors together. It would taste kind of forbidden. It would be worth tasting though. I would also put marshmallows on for topping. I would add extra chocolate chips in them. That would be the new flavor.

Georgia Pederson
age 10, grade 4
Maple River West

My ice cream would be called “Get your game on.” My ice cream would be flavored with the taste of Gatorade! It would have little balls such as soccer balls and basketballs! They would be chocolate! The ingredients are: Gatorade, food coloring and ice! They make my ice cream the best!

Lexi Schoper
age 10, grade 5
Hoover

I came up with the idea because I play softball and we chew a lot of seeds during games. This would be a healthy ice cream for softball players. If I could invent any ice cream, the ingredients would consist of ranch sunflower seeds, original sunflower seeds, salt and pepper sunflower seeds, dill pickle sunflower seeds, barbecue sunflower seeds and peach ice cream. It is called Sunflower Swirl!

Darien Klindworth-Woods

I would make ice cream with sour cream and onion Pringles because I like the flavor.

Nick Courrier
age 13, grade 7
Loyola

If I could create a type of ice cream, I would create School Ice Cream. It would contain math books, geography books, science books, and English books all mashed up with strawberry and sprinkles. I would not be able to taste the textbooks; it would just taste like normal ice cream. I would create this so that when I eat it, I would get smarter.

Ashley Plamann
age 13, grade 7
St. Peter Lutheran

It would be called Monkey Bread Swirl. It would have vanilla and chocolate ice cream, Monkey Bread sprinkles, chocolate sauce, strawberry sauce, cookie dough and Monkey Bread in the ice cream. It’s for people who love to take risks. Once you start eating it, you don’t want to stop.

Josh Baker
age 10, grade 4
Cleveland

My ice cream would be green and slimy. You needed glue, ice, 20 hairs from your head and green melted Jell-O. Then put it in the freezer and it is good to go.

Jacob Kiecker
age 8, grade 3
Risen Savior Lutheran

I would invent a really good flavor. It would be Buck Feed. The ingredients are: Two cups of oatmeal, two cups of peanut butter, one teaspoon of vanilla, two cups of chocolate chip chunks, one teaspoon of melted chocolate chips and one teaspoon of caramel. Those are the ingredients and that’s how you make Buck Feed.

Emma Maguet
age 9, grade 4

I would invent Rainbow ice cream. It would have all kinds of flavors like grape, watermelon, strawberry, orange and blue raspberry. It is made with all of those fruits but there’s not any cut-up fruits in there. It’s just plain. My ice cream would be called the End of the Rainbow.

Hailey Holtz
age 14, grade 8
Martin County West

Have you every played out in the snow during the winter? Have you ever eaten any snow?

If I had to invent a new ice cream flavor, it would be snow flavored. It would be called “S’no flavor” because snow doesn’t really have a flavor. S’no flavor would also have little flavor packets you can add to it. For example, if you bought a strawberry flavor packet, you could use it to turn your S’no flavor ice cream strawberry. They would come in all different flavors. You could use any flavor or just eat the S’no flavor plain, which would be snowflavored.

Snow is very delicious. If I could invent an ice cream flavor, it would be S’no flavor.

Andy Thompson
age 13, grade 7

If I could create a new flavor of ice cream, it would be the pizza ice cream because it has a unique flavor. It would consist of bread dough, pepperoni, cheese, pizza sauce and ice cream. I would make that flavor because then you could enjoy a full meal and have dessert at the same time. It would also have added on flavors such as chocolate, mint, sausage and other things! You could also get it in many styles, such as Italian, monk and many others (or things that I can’t think of). You could have it in a bowl, cone, as flat as a normal pizza or whatever you chose. This could change the world completely! No one could create this kind of pizza since I would have copyrighted it!

If I were to invent a new flavor of ice cream, it would be called dill chilled ice cream. I would name it this because I like dill pickles. The base of the ice cream would be chocolate. There would be chopped up dill pickles with chocolate syrup over the top. Dill chilled ice cream would be awesome!

If I could create any flavor of ice cream, I would make a Captain Crunch flavored ice cream. I love ice cream and I love Captain Crunch, so there couldn’t possibly be anything better.

I would create a Captain Crunch flavored ice cream because Captain Crunch is the best cereal ever, so that means the ice cream would be the best ever too. I would also create this ice cream because every kid loves Captain Crunch, so every kid would want to buy Captain Crunch flavored ice cream.

If I could create any flavor of ice cream, I would make a Captain Crunch flavored ice cream because Captain Crunch is the best cereal ever and every kid would want to buy it.

If I could invent a new kind of ice cream, the flavor would be “Marshmallowmilkpretzel” because I like those things and because the ingredients are good because, if the ice cream went bad or the milk went bad, the pretzels and marshmallows would be okay to eat because those are non-perishable foods and, if you are stuck in the snow in a cold car, the sugar would keep you alive for a little longer until somebody came looking for you.

The ingredients for the ice cream are: Marshmallows (rainbow and normal), pretzels (with vanilla covering) and milk (normal, not chocolate). The ingredients are different from what you would normally find in ice cream, and I tried the new stuff and it tastes really good.
