MANKATO — When we last left a capella group Home Free, they were on their way to board Celebrity Cruises’ biggest ship, the Infinity, to perform in front of 2,000 passengers five times a week for several months along the Alaskan coast line.
They were also releasing a new CD before they left. Some time between then and now, the group managed to record yet another CD, “Kickin’ It Old School,” to be released Friday at the Wow! Zone.
Home Free is made up of tenor Chris Rupp, high tenor Matt Atwood, bass Joe Fine, vocal percussionist Adam Rupp and Jeff Grider, who used to sing with The Xtension Cords at the University of Illinois.
Their sound is more of a vocal band. Don’t think traditional barbershop a cappela. The singers mimic the sounds of actual instruments, which takes precision and a lot of practice.
The unofficial beginning to the group was as early as high school, when the Rupps and Atwood sang together. They later came together more officially in college and added a couple of members.
“Old School” follows “From the Top,” which came out a couple of years ago.
