An exhibit of art and poetry based on the Fibonacci principle, a recurring number sequence, is opening at Raydiance Salon in Mankato.
In 1202, Leonardo of Pisa, known as Fibonacci, discovered a sequence of numbers called “Fibonacci Sequence,” according to a booklet on the subject by local author Terri Longenecker DeGezelle.
“The Fibonacci number is achieved by adding the two previous numbers like this: 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89 and so on. When dividing a Fibonacci number in consecutive pair, you will always end up with 1.6180, known as the ‘Golden Ratio,’” the booklet, “Fibonacci in Nature,” says.
Besides being used in financial markets and computer algorithms, Fibonacci numbers appear in biological settings, such as arrangements of leaves and the structure of a pine cone, among many other things.
The opening reception is Monday at Raydiance.
