Midwest Family Gathering gets together today

— The Midwest Family Gathering should  have a little something for everyone.

The outdoor music festival spreads more than 30 bands across three days at The Sanctuary, an organic hobby farm near Franklin, Minn.

“From solo acoustic to hip-hop to bluegrass -- it’s all over the place, and it’s supposed to be,” said Christy Steinbach, who booked and organized the show through her Mankato-based company Full Moon Productions. “This is everybody’s festival.”

All the bands have a local or regional fan base and dovetail with Steinbach’s mission to promote homegrown music.

Mankato-based bluegrass groups Useful Jenkins and the Bitterroot Band play on Saturday. Mankato hip-hop artist brainDED also performs on Saturday while fellow Mankato hip-hoppers J Mose, Rellium Prime and Professor Fresh perform on Friday.

The three day lineup also includes regional acts Dead Larry, T.U.G.G., Soap, Tronic Tribe, Shakedown City and others.

The venue is rather small -- only a limited number of tickets are available -- and chosen specifically to preserve a relaxed atmosphere. Steinbach said it’s a family-friendly festival that will even have an art station where kids can create their own tapestries to be hung behind the stage.

“The reason we do this is to bring everyone together,” she said. “A lot of people do festivals like this, but this is more intimate.”

Steinbach said she began planning the event almost nine months ago. This year represents the third edition of the Midwest Family Gathering.
