MANKATO —
There’s only one “dragapella” beautyshop quartet -- and it’s coming to Mankato on Oct. 18.
Kinsey Sicks was conceived in 1993 by five male friends who wanted to perform barbershop quartet-style music in drag. Their moniker is a reference to Alfred Kinsey’s heterosexual-homosexual rating scale, with a rating of 6 referring to exclusive homosexuality.
The Kinsey Sicks have legally trademarked the term “dragapella” and have performed nationwide for more than 16 years.
Two of the original members -- Ben Schatz and Irwin Keller -- still perform with the group. Schatz is a civil rights lawyer and former Director of the National Gay and Lesbian Medical Association. He also authored Bill Clinton's HIV policy during the 1992 presidential campaign. Keller is the former director of the AIDS Legal Referral Panel and authored Chicago's gay rights ordinance.
Other members include Spencer Brown and Jeff Manabat.
The Kinsey Sicks have performed in an Off-Broadway show, an extended run in Vegas, two feature films and have released seven albums.
