ST. PAUL — For many teams, a 12-point swing in the state wrestling tournament would prove fatal. For Scott West, it was just a minor imposition on the way to the Class AA consolation finals.
The Panthers downed Totino Grace 36-25 at Xcel Energy Center on Friday, surviving an administrative mixup to do so. The controversy came at 189 pounds when co-head coach Jerold Stauffacher reported second-ranked Michael Kroells as his team’s wrestler, but the table official said he heard the name of alternate Michael Riker.
Kroells went on to pin Joe Gomez to give the Panthers a 37-13 lead with just two bouts remaining. Totino Grace coaches pointed out the mistake at the conclusion of the 215-pound bout, however, and after a lengthy discussion, officials determined that the Panthers had to forfeit the 189-pound victory.
That closed the gap to 30-25 with one bout remaining, but Scott West heavyweight Travis Hentges clinched the win a few minutes later by sticking Rich Donovan in 3:23.
“It’s fortunate that we had wrestled so well before that and had a lead,” Scott West co-head coach Darren Ripley said. “A 12-point swing is pretty big, but we had enough to get through it.”
Ripley felt the turning point came after the 140-pound match with his team leading 22-13. Marty Dvorak won 7-1 at 145, Paul Dvorak won 3-1 at 152 and Nick Dvorak won a 5-3 overtime decision at 160.
“Those were three big wins for us,” Ripley said. “And Patrick Dvorak wrestled really well at 140, too.
“Patrick has really been snakebit up here. He lost on a reversal today with two seconds left, but (Totino Grace’s Mark) O’Keefe is a really good wrestler with more than 30 wins. It was a great effort by Patrick.”
The win improves the fifth-ranked Panthers to 19-8 and pits them against ninth-rated Adrian Area in today’s 10 a.m. consolation championship. Because of the disqualification at 189 pounds, Scott West will have to forfeit at 171, 189 or 215 in today’s final dual.

LCWM 38, Border W. 22
Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial rallied from a 16-0 deficit after four weights to pull out the consolation win and advance to the Class A fifth-place dual.
“We knew they were really tough down low and we would probably fall behind,” LCWM coach Andre Harnitz said. “We just tried to minimize the damage and hoped that we could score some points through the middle and up top.”
That’s exactly what the Knights did, outscoring Border West 35-6 from 135 pounds on up. LCWM dominated in the upper weights, getting four falls in the last seven matches. Paul Norgren (135 pounds), Eric Hood (145), Aaron Hutchens (152), Cody Tibbetts (171) and Seth Ellanson (285) all finished with falls for the winners. Nate Meixell added a major decision at 189.
“Nate and Thomas Sandt had a couple of nice wins for us at 189 and 215,” Harnitz said. “They were both wrestling up a weight, and they both beat good kids (with around 25 wins apiece).”
The sixth-ranked Knights (21-3) are matched up against seventh-rated Paynesville in today’s 10 a.m. consolation championship.
