My View: Mankato will improve on key community growth and livability issues

— As the chair of Greater Mankato Growth, I recently had the opportunity to accompany 70 leaders from the greater Mankato area on a visit to Charlottesville, Va. It was an insightful visit and there were many takeaways that will result in improvements in how we do things.

But I left that experience with one predominant thought: Here in greater Mankato, we are working on the right things.

We have much to be proud of in our community; specifically the collaboration among community members, businesses, government entities and not-for-profit organizations. Like Charlottesville, we are working on a number of key initiatives, including improving education for everyone, transportation and early childhood development, while enhancing the livability of our community and working to become a destination for people to live, work and recreate.

And like Mankato, Charlottesville is a very scenic, beautiful place. They have the University of Virginia, area mountains and Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson.

However, unlike Mankato, Charlottesville relies on just a few major economic drivers; the University, a large medical center, tourism and federal government spending (that community is just two hours from Washington, D.C.).

Our economy in Mankato is more diverse, with many secondary education facilities, regional medical organizations, manufacturing and engineering, a robust agricultural economy, destination retail locations and arts and culture opportunities. We have great outdoor areas including parks and recreation opportunities, running and bike trails, skiing and area lakes. In short, we have something on the menu for everyone.

I must admit I am rather biased when it comes to my hometown. But in reality, isn’t that a bias we should all have?

I am proud of the work our community is doing and our recent visit to Charlottesville not only enhanced that pride, it reaffirmed that the work we are doing is worthwhile and well-targeted.
