Mankato Mayor John Brady should step aside now so the city of Mankato can begin to regain its trust with the public. Brady has now been charged with four alcohol-related misdemeanors, with one possibly being upgraded to a gross misdemeanor.
According to the police report, he drove drunk for several miles on a freeway and apparently hit several cars, while being followed by a police officer.
As mayor, Brady is the face of the city. His duties, in addition to having one vote on the council, are to be “. . . the head of city government for ceremonial purposes.” He is, in effect, the head of public relations for the city.
His recent lawless and dangerous behavior is the opposite of what the city has been trying to encourage over the past several years. The city has expended huge amounts of human and monetary capital to compel citizens to follow the law and to use alcohol responsibly.
It is impossible for Brady to credibly represent the city in these efforts. He should resign immediately, so the city can begin to regain its credibility and trust with the public.
