— I would like to comment on the letter in Tuesday's Free Press from Leona M. Roth.
In her letter, she says that what concerns her that in “67 years the same-sex couple will not have a family that will continue the growth of our country and that will have the blessings of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness in our great America.” She is totally mistaken.
First of all, the same-sex couple is also deserving of the blessings of “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” in our great country, the same as every other citizen.
Secondly, a same-sex couple can also adopt children and make sure those children have the same blessings. Her 24 family members will still have the same blessings and will in the future.
There are hundreds, possibly even thousands of cases where the children of a man and woman that are married have abused their children, have divorced and created conditions where not they, but their children have not been able to achieve the blessings of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
If the union of a man and woman is so important for the well being of this country, why is it that we have one of the highest divorce rates in the world?
We also have hundreds and possibly thousands of single-parent families as well with happy, adjusted children, so one cannot say that it is necessary to have both a mother and father.
The important thing is to remember that even the Bible tells that the most important thing to remember is love. “Love one another as I have loved you.”
