We enjoyed reading Jim Rueda's Nov. 8 column "Fall sports season chock full of memorable performances" and would like to add our local high school soccer teams to his list.
The Mankato East boys' soccer team qualified for the state tournament for the second time in just three years. The Mankato East girls' soccer team finished the season 14-4-0 with a school-record number of wins and for the first time ever, were listed in the Class A Top 10 girls' team rankings, easily earning the section 2A No. 1 playoff seed.
Both Mankato West boys' and girls' teams also ended their seasons strong, advancing to the section semi-finals and section championship, respectively, and the St. Peter girls' soccer team qualified for the state tournament for the third consecutive year after upsetting Mankato East and West in close games.
Area players named to the Class A 2012 All-State teams included Marta Anderson (East) and Albert Podshivaylov (East); area players named to the Class A 2012 All-State Honorable Mention teams included Maddy Burandt (West) and Bill Leitch (West).
We think our local high school soccer teams and coaches deserve kudos on their excellent and very entertaining seasons.
Congratulations also to the Nicollet Raiders football team and Coach Tom Murphy for an exciting 10-1 season, undefeated until their section championship game. With only three seniors, the Raiders came very close to a 4th straight trip to the state tournament, and Evan Guffey set a new school receiving record of over 1,500 yards for the season. Fantastic.
