Your View: Bill passed by GOP and vetoed barred military ID

— Rep. Tony Cornish exhibits wishful thinking time and again in his opinion piece of Oct. 28 when he asserts the ease of voting that various groups will have if the voter ID amendment is passed.

Take for instance his claim that military members can use their ID’s along with a utility bill to vote. If the enabling legislation turns out to be anything like the vetoed bill of 2011, S.F. 509, that will not be true.

In section 19 of that bill, a military ID could only be used along with an “original receipt for a new, renewed, or updated driver’s license, state identification card, or voter identification card...”

Mr. Cornish is being a little premature in stating what constitutes acceptable ID or voting procedures should this amendment be passed.

As to the enabling legislation, Cornish suggests that “we can use language that works in other states.” I want legislative language that works for Minnesota, not a rubber stamp.

Voting in favor of this amendment is like buying a pig in a poke. Vote No!
