Your View: Can't vote Democrat and be a Christian

— Like many, my parents struggled through the Great Depression of the 1930s. They called this time the Hoover Days! Roosevelt and the DFL party were their heroes. They firmly believed the DFL represented them.

 As I grew up, I followed their voting practices and during the late ‘50s and early ‘60s became active in the DFL. I attended the caucus, was a voting delegate at the conventions.

 I observed that the Democratic party was being taken over by those with very liberal social views. There were the flower children, the pro-abortion backers, and those who believed our government owed them everlasting handouts. The gay community and ultra-feminist groups joined. To me these liberal views stem from a lack of understanding of God’s natural and moral laws.

Among my concerns are the senseless wars and the killing and maiming of our troops, the excessive costs of these wars; the lack of jobs and the resulting economic problems. We are told we must accept taxpayer funding of abortion resulting in the death of innocent children, embryonic stem cell research, easy access to contraceptives, living together without marriage, disregard for God’s plan for marriage of one man and one woman thus allowing same sex marriage.

 All of these very liberal social decrees can be found in the current Democratic platform with the support and advocacy of Barack Obama.

 It took an examination of my own beliefs, bending of my pride, and admitting to myself that the Democratic party was not the party I remembered and worked for. When I take time to study the current Democratic party, in my opinion, there is no way I can vote Democrat and still call myself a Christian.
