Your View: GOP attacks against Obama are hateful

— A disturbing trend has developed and intensified — extremists in the Republican party have found it acceptable to deride President Obama in racist and other hateful terms.

Former New Hampshire governor John Sununu calls the president “lazy, stupid and distracted.” Former Alaska governor Sarah Palin talks of him “shuckin’ and jivin’.” Former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich calls him a “food stamp president.” FOX commentator Ann Coulter calls him “a retard.” Birther Donald Trump tries to bribe him for college and passport data.

It would be bad enough if these were average rednecks venting about our first black president, but they are people in power from whom much better is expected.

We, the people, require that those in power separate policies from the personal, counter a political position with a well-thought-out position of their own while respecting the worth and dignity of their opponent.

How can people who broadcast demeaning slurs then expect us to view them as non-biased on other issues?

If people in any branch of government use disrespectful or hate-filled speech, how do they then hope to build bridges with members of other political parties or to compromise on vital legislation?

Rep. Joe Wilson yells “you lie” at President Obama during a speech before Congress; Speaker of the House John Boehner refuses the president’s request to address Congress; Arizona Governor Jan Brewer shakes a finger in his face; Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito "heckles" the president at a state of the union address.

For our upcoming multi-cultural generation, we must protest this unprecedented racism. We cannot stand such poison directed at President Obama or any other public servant.
