Your View — Merging cities won’t save money
I do not think that merging Mankato and North Mankato is a good idea.
First, I find the figures about savings interesting. Savings for whom? And what is going to be done with those savings? My experience with government is that they just find a way to spend any additional funds available to them. What I find valuable in governing bodies is transparency and accountability — both qualities that would be reduced were Mankato and North Mankato to be merged.
It’s also interesting to see that a majority of the savings would be in the area of public safety. Why would North Mankato want to become involved with a bureaucracy that has been recently reported to be dysfunctional? Also, why would we want to merge with a government that needs an outside agency to find out that its public safety department is dysfunctional?
Those facts lead me to believe that there are power struggles and transparency issues in Mankato that I want to have nothing to do with.
Whenever I think about this issue I wonder: Who is to gain? I don’t see it being me.
