Your View: Minnesota can't afford, doesn't need Voter ID

— Minnesota has the biggest voter turnout of any state. The last two elections had high profile recounts, neither one showed any voter fraud.

This really has the smell of sour grapes. Republicans didn’t want to accept the way the votes were cast in those elections. Maybe that is why we have this constitutional amendment on our ballots.

Why would we, as citizens of Minnesota, want to have the voter ID legislation passed that would make it harder for a lot of our citizens to vote or have their votes counted? Why would we want to change a good voter turnout into a bad one?

The Republicans are saying the state would issue IDs to people who need them. Who is going to pay for that? Taxpayers, that’s who.

The state has been having budget problems as it is, so why would we want to add over a million dollars in cost to our state budget?

People have lost their jobs because of cutbacks in state funding. The cost of this amendment would put more strain on the communities and townships. And what about the students: Are their IDs going to be accepted or not? They weren’t when it was being talked about on the hill. What about senior citizens who live in nursing homes? What about townships who vote absentee?

They don’t have the answers.

Vote “no” on the constitutional amendment for voter ID. We can’t afford it and we don’t need it.
