I’ve been discouraged by many of the recent letters attacking Rep. Tim Walz, or as I know him, Coach Walz. As a Mankato West graduate, I saw him in action on the football field and in the classroom.
If there is ever a man or woman more passionate for the well being of the residents of Mankato and southern Minnesota, I have yet to meet him or her.
Walz’ appropriation requests for FY 2011 were the topic of a recent letter from Wayne Comstock. Comstock makes some trivial arguments that are foolhardy at best.
All the requests made by Walz have been posted on his Web site for weeks. I received an e-mail from him outlining each request.
The congressman even went so far as to explicitly ask for input on the requests. I am encouraged by projects like “Beyond the Yellow Ribbon Reintegration Program” that focuses on Minnesota National Guard veterans and providing them with the support they need to return to civilian life.
I dare Comstock to renounce that.
How about an economic development project — $1 million to improve and expand Madison Avenue in Mankato?
Greater Mankato is growing and our infrastructure has not kept up with demand. I want to see my community grow and not be held back by a crumbling infrastructure.
Projects like these are important for our community and fill a specific need. I applaud Walz for his restraint, thoughtfulness and transparency throughout the appropriation process.
