Governor declares emergency in area counties

— Gov. Tim Pawlenty is activating the Minnesota National Guard to help counties prepare for flooding this spring.

Pawlenty on Monday declared a state of emergency in 28 counties affected by potential flooding across western, southern, central and eastern Minnesota.

The governor's order activates the National Guard to help with flood preparation and to provide emergency relief.

Pawlenty also directed state officials to activate the Minnesota Emergency Operations Plan and to help local governments deal with flooding.

The counties are Big Stone, Blue Earth, Brown, Carver, Chippewa, Clay, Dakota, Goodhue, Hennepin, Kittson, Lac Qui Parle, Le Sueur, Lyon, Marshall, Nicollet, Norman, Polk, Ramsey, Redwood, Renville, Scott, Sibley, Swift, Traverse, Washington, Wilkin, Wright and Yellow Medicine.
