MANKATO —
A man accused of brutally assaulting another man after being released from jail for earlier assaults received extra jail time during a sentencing hearing Monday.
Dustin Lee Murilla, 23, was arrested in July after an Owatonna man reported Murilla had brutally beat him and left him for dead in South Bend Township. Murilla had been released from jail less than a month before his arrest after reaching a plea deal for two previous assaults, one in July 2011 and one in April.
During the sentencing hearing Monday, District Court Judge Bradley Walker sentenced Murilla to a year in jail for beating a man and stealing his cell phone on April 30. Murilla will receive credit for 97 days he has already served in jail.
Walker noted that it¹s unlikely Murilla would be released from jail anyway because he is facing attempted murder charges for the South Bend Township assault and his bail has been set at $250,000.
Murilla¹s attorney, Kristine Hinds MacLean, didn¹t object to the extra time.
Walker said he would reconsider the sentence if the new charges are resolved
before his jail time is completed.
"I suspect it will be several months before his new case is resolved," she
said.
