Night to Unite set for late August

MANKATO — Todd Miller is putting the call for registrations out early for this year's Night to Unite event with the hope of having more participation.

The city-wide event is scheduled for Aug. 28 and anyone wants to host an event is encouraged to call 311 or 507-387-8600 for information about how to register. Police officers, firefighters and other city staff will make plans to visit every registered event.

Employee visits will give residents a chance to ask questions about crime, fire prevention, snow removal, street repairs or anything else related to city services. It's also a chance to meet neighbors.

There were about 40 neighborhood picnics and other events last year. Miller, Mankato's public safety director, is hoping to have 50 or more events this year. The Mankato Night to Unite is later in August than the national event because the city wants to include college students who return to Mankato in late August.

"We want to involve thousands of our citizens in crime prevention and getting to know our city employees," Miller said. "This is a partnership. We can't do this by ourselves. To make a safe community, we need citizens to get involved."
