City sign damaged, charges requested

MANKATO — Charges of careless driving and leaving the scene of an accident are being requested for a man who allegedly crashed his car into a city sign Thursday night.

The crash, which damaged the large, lighted sign at the intersection of Riverfront Drive and Hickory Street, was reported at about 11:50 p.m. The driver of the car left the scene, but witnesses were able to describe the car as a 1990s-style Chevy Monte Carlo that had major front-end damage.

The car was found at 105 La Costa lane at about 6:30 a.m. Friday. Mankato police reported Bashir Ahmed Ali, 21, admitted to driving the car when it hit the sign, a news release said.
