LAKE CRYSTAL — A 69-year-old Nicollet man was in fair condition Thursday after his car was hit by a train Wednesday morning in Lake Crystal.

William Henry Epper was taken to the hospital by ambulance after his 1999 Buick Century was hit by a Union Pacific Railroad train at about 9:15 a.m. The car had extensive damage after the crash at the railroad's intersection with Blue Earth County Road 112, a Lake Crystal Police Department report said.

Witnesses told police officers the operator of the locomotive pulling the train had blown a horn several times before the crash. Epper was traveling south on the the county road. The intersection on the east edge of Lake Crystal is the same spot where two Blue Earth County employees were killed when their truck was hit by a train in 2009.
