MANKATO — Police are putting out gun safety reminders after a teenage boy was injured while he and another boy fired a rifle in a Mankato yard.
Around 10 a.m. Tuesday the two boys, both 15, brought a .22 rifle and targets to a backyard in the 1500 block of North Broad Street, a Mankato Department of Public Safety report said. They told police, who had received a report of gunfire, that the gun accidentally fired and a bullet fragment ricocheted off of a brick and struck one of the male's legs.
The boy who was injured did not seek treatment until he was brought to the hospital by has parents at about 10 p.m. Tuesday. The injured boy was treated and released. Misdemeanor charges of firing a gun in city limits and disorderly conduct are being requested for one of the boys, the report said.
Police are reminding residents that firing any guns, even pellet guns, within city limits. They are also reminding parents to store firearms in a secure location that is not accessible to children.
