MANKATO —
The paving of Highways 60 and 169 between Mankato and Lake Crystal has been slowed after wood fragments were found in the freshly laid asphalt.
The contractor, Central Specialties of Alexandria, apparently stacked its road-building material atop a pile of lumber, Minnesota Department of Transportation spokeswoman Rebecca Arndt said. The loader was unaware that some of the lumber also had been picked up.
Other parts of the project are proceeding as MnDOT examines the piece of road in question.
Arndt said it wasn’t yet clear if all of the contaminated asphalt will have to be removed. The error was discovered about a week ago.
It does appear the $5.4 million project will be delayed by about a week. It was slated to be finished in mid-July and now has an estimated end of July 21.
“This contract is really fast-paced,” she said, “...They were on schedule, this will add a few days.”
Arndt said the asphalt contamination is an honest mistake. No fines are being contemplated.
“That’s why we have inspectors out there,” she said.
The contractor did not return a message left Friday afternoon.
In related news, all of the ramps on Highway 169 are open as of Friday. The paving project goes between the North Star Bridge in Mankato and County Road 115.
