Nicollet County Board sets starting salary of new administrator

ST PETER — New Nicollet County Administrator Ryan Krosch will have a starting salary of $111,586 when he begins his duties Jan. 1.

The Nicollet County Board Tuesday voted on an employment agreement  that the county’s Personnel Committee had negotiated with the Yellow Medicine county administrator, who hails from the Vernon Center area.

Before the vote to finalize the agreement, the board briefly debated a clause relating to severance pay in the event of termination without cause.

The agreement calls for six months severance pay if the administrator is terminated, a standard provision in such agreements.

Commissioner Marie Dranttel said she was “uncomfortable” with the six-month severance payment, saying she favored a three-month provision instead. Commissioner David Haack agreed.

Commissioner James Stenson backed the six-month severance clause, saying it was negotiated in good faith and changing it now might give Krosch second thoughts about the position.

The board ultimately voted in favor of the six-month provision with Haack said he was doing so “reluctantly” and Dranttel casting the sole no vote.

The board in October decided to offer the job to Krosch following interviews with three finalists. The board in May opted to re-open the candidate search after it failed to come to an agreement on the initial group of three finalists.

Krosch was an applicant for the position last spring but withdrew his name early in the process.

Krosch’s previous administrative positions include serving as community and economic development director for the Upper Minnesota Valley Regional Development Commission and working in a similar capacity with the Mid-Minnesota Development Commission.

Krosch will replace Bob Podhradsky, who retired in July.
