Suspect arrested for alleged Mankato hotel rape

MANKATO — Felony charges have been filed against a 19-year-old Mankato man who is accused of raping a female at a hotel where both were staying.

Jalen Tyrice Dorsey was arrested Wednesday after police were called to the Budget Host Inn by Craig Hinkle, a social worker with Lutheran Social Service. He told police the victim had sent him text messages saying she needed help because she was being held hostage in her hotel room.

Three police officers went to the victim’s room and reported Dorsey was there with her. They also reported they had to threaten to kick the door in before Dorsey would let them inside the room.

Once inside, the officers found blood on the victim’s bed, according to a criminal complaint filed Friday. Dorsey’s room, which was down the hall, also was searched and blood was found in that bed. Dorsey was arrested and the victim taken to the hospital.

When interviewed, the victim said she had moved to the area recently from Rochester. She said she contacted Lutheran Social Service for help and someone there brought her to the hotel. That person also introduced her to Dorsey, who was already staying there, the complaint said.

Dorsey and the victim, whose age was not released in the complaint, shared a cab ride downtown Tuesday. Dorsey stole a bottle of rum from the liquor store at Walgreens and the two of them returned to his room to drink it, the complaint said.

During a conversation about Dorsey’s ex-girlfriend, Dorsey “snapped” and started assaulting her, she said. It was at that point he forced her onto the bed in his room, tore off her clothes and raped her the first time, she reported.

The victim was able to escape to a room across the hall and call 911. She returned to her room and waited for police. There was a knock at her door about five minutes later and she assumed it was an officer, but it was Dorsey. The victim said he forced himself into her room and physically assaulted her again before taking her cellphone. He also said he was going to kill her and hide her body, the complaint said.

The victim told police “she was terrified and at one point considered jumping out the second story window to get away,” the complaint said. Dorsey allegedly raped her again in her room before falling asleep at about 2 a.m. Wednesday. By that time, the victim said she was so afraid she just sat in the corner of the room.

Police had been called to the hotel at about 9 p.m. Tuesday after receiving a 911 call report saying the same victim was being assaulted in the hallway by Dorsey, said Matt Westermayer, Department of Public Safety deputy director. An officer who responded spoke to the victim, who had visible injuries. Westermayer said the victim did not say she had been sexually assaulted at that point.

Dorsey couldn’t be found in his room or anywhere in or around the hotel, so the officer asked the front desk person to call 911 as soon as he returned, Westermayer said. A notice also was put out to other law enforcement officers to arrest Dorsey immediately if he was found anywhere else. The report from Hinkle came later, Westermayer said.

When Dorsey was interviewed at the jail, he said he started hanging out with the victim Monday and they were drinking rum together Tuesday. He told investigators the sex was consensual.

Dorsey’s bail was set at $100,000 when he appeared in court Friday for felony charges of first-degree criminal sexual conduct, first-degree burglary and making terroristic threats.
