ELYSIAN — State Sen. Al DeKruif of rural Elysian said today he won't run in a Republican primary for the Senate District 23 seat.
In a prepared statement, DeKruif said his decision was made after much thought and encouragement from area conservative activists.
"I stand proudly with Republican activists who believe elected officials must stick true to our conservative principles...Unfortunately, this legislative session Republicans shied away from putting the Freedom-to-Work amendment on the ballot, and some Republicans chose to support the plan for the Vikings stadium, which was not in the best interest of taxpayers of Minnesota."
DeKruif announced in March he wouldn't seek re-election, then admitted to having second thoughts about that decision.
HIs quandary was driven by a judical panel's action that redrew the state's legislative districts to equalize populations following the 2010 census.
That put his residence in new District 23, home to longtime state Sen. Julie Rosen of Fairmont, a Republican who sponsored the Senate's Vikings stadium bill.
