Quist announces run for Congress

MANKATO — After three straight campaigns where Allen Quist finished as runner-up to another Republican candidate, the retired farmer from rural St. Peter told a Mankato audience today that 2012 will be his year.

Quist β€” who lost to Gov. Arne Carlson in the 1994 primary election for governor, finished second to Norm Coleman at the 1998 Republican gubernatorial endorsing convention, and finished second to Rep. Randy Demmer in the 2010 party endorsing convention in the 1st Congressional District race β€” said growing concern about the national debt, respect for his leadership skills and the momentum from his second-place finish two years ago will propel him to the Nov. 6 general election.

Democratic congressman Tim Walz is the ultimate target for Quist, but Republican state Sen. Mike Parry of Waseca also is seeking the Republican nomination to challenge Walz.
