Stabbing leads to marijuana, cash, guns

MANKATO — A man who has been caught burglarizing an occupied home in the past was
treated for stab wounds after he allegedly attempted to steal a bag of pot
from a Mankato house.

Police responding to a report of the man being treated at the Mankato
hospital¹s Emergency Room ended up searching the downtown house and
confiscating a knife, marijuana, a large amount of cash and guns last week.
No charges had been filed against anyone involved as of Thursday afternoon.

Medical staff called police about the stabbing victim at 5:20 p.m. Aug. 23.
Another man who was with the victim was questioned. He told police the
wounded man had been attempting to steal marijuana when he was attacked,
according to an affidavit requesting a search warrant for the house.

A third man had told the victim that people living in the 500 block of North
Fifth Street were dealers. So all three men went to the house to meet for a
drug buy, with the third man apparently not knowing about the victim¹s plan.
The witness, who said he was not allowed to go into the house with the
victim and the third man, said the victim eventually ran out of the house
saying he had been stabbed.

As the victim was bleeding, the two men drove around Mankato for awhile. The
victim told his friend he was concerned a trip to the hospital would get him
into trouble with his probation officer. The victim pleaded guilty in
November to burglarizing an occupied home in Watonwan County.

The witness told police the victim estimated there was about a half pound of
marijuana in the house and that one of the men inside was wrestling with him
when he was stabbed.

The victim told police a slightly different story. He said he went to the
house planning to buy a half ounce of marijuana. He said a man at the house
robbed him after he pulled out $200 to purchase the pot. He knew he had been
stabbed, but he wasn¹t sure if it was the robber or someone else in the
house.

Based on the information provided by both men, a search warrant was
requested for the house. The search took place about four hours after the
stabbing was reported.

A kitchen steak knife, an undisclosed amount of marijuana, prescription
pills, $4,850 in cash, an assault rifle, three shotguns, digital scales and
drug paraphernalia were among the items confiscated during the search,
according to court records.
