MANKATO — The folks at Century 21 behind the annual Free Outdoor Family Movie Night series have wanted to show a Disney movie for a long time.
But Disney keeps their titles “in the vault” and only releases certain ones every once in a while, said Laurie Cottingham of Century 21. But this year the planets have aligned, and “Lady and the Tramp” will be the series’ Disney debut July 20.
Cottingham is also excited about this Friday’s film, which kicks off the outdoor movie showings this season at 9 p.m. Cottingham said “Ghostbusters” will be a fitting premiere considering this Friday happens to fall on the 13th.
“We wanted to show a fun one with ghosts in it,” she said.
The screening is the only one that falls on the same night as the new Movies in the Park series presented by the St. Peter Department of Recreation. “Back to the Future” will be shown at 9:10 p.m. on the inflatable screen in Jefferson Park in St. Peter.
But Cottingham said there’s no sense of competition here.
“No, they’re in St. Peter, and St. Peter has a wonderful community,” she said. “It’s great that they can offer that for their people over there.”
As in previous years, popcorn and pop will be sold for a quarter at the Mankato outdoor movies, held across the street from the Verizon Wireless Center at 10 Civic Center Plaza. All proceeds from concessions go to Easter Seals.
The weather may be hot, but as long as there’s no wind or rain, Cottingham said Friday’s event will go on as scheduled. Cottingham said Century 21 has had fun with what has become an annual summer tradition.
“It’s just a thank you for all the years of business people have had with us,” she said.
St. Peter’s recreation department plans to have an inflatable bowling alley, concessions and kids games an hour before the movie Friday. They’re also hoping to find a St. Peter resident who is rumored to own a DeLorean, like the famous car in “Back to the Future,” to have at the park.
Anyone who knows the owner is asked to call the recreation department at 934-0667.
