Storm left hail, wind damage in its wake

Winter scene created by hail, high winds

NORTH MANKATO — Check out this map of area storm damage reports from Tuesday, June 1

A spate of thunderstorms on Tuesday resulted in a round of area storm warnings and one other-worldly scene between Mankato and St. Peter.

Around 1 p.m., a storm system that affected the southern third of Minnesota crossed Highway 169 near the entrance to Seven Mile Creek Park. Hail nearly the size of a quarter pelted the roadway, creating piles of ice along the shoulders for almost two miles.

At the same time, a cloud of condensation blanketed the road and adjacent riverway, creating pockets of very low visibility and the appearance of a snowy, icy enclave in the midst of spring.

The storm system spread hail and high winds across the region, with gusts upward of 60 mph causing some damage in Martin County. By early evening, however, much of the severe weather had moved on or tapered off.
