MANKATO — House Speaker Margaret Anderson Kelliher returned to the rural Mankato farm where she grew up to announce today that she’s running for governor.
Surrounded by family, neighbors, former teachers and 4-H folks, Kelliher spoke of the lessons she learned as a farm girl, the advantages gained from a high-quality school system and her plans for Minnesota if she’s elected.
“On this farm, we worked together and we played together,” said Kelliher, who has represented a south Minneapolis district in the state House since 1998. “We hunted and we fished and we built something we still call home today.”
She promised to be a coalition builder as governor, bringing disparate groups together like she did as speaker in getting business organizations to support a transportation funding bill over the objections of Republican Gov. Tim Pawlenty. Pawlenty is not seeking a third term as governor.
