Waseca humane society saddles up to rescue horse

WASECA — Brietta eats like a horse, because she is one, and needs new shots and foot care to boot.

That’s why the Waseca County Animal Humane Society is trying to pony up the funds required to help feed and care for the homeless half-Arabian mare.

Meantime, adoption applications from experienced horse people are being taken for the 8-year-old animal. This is the first horse to be rescued by the organization since its inception in 2010.

“There is absolutely nothing wrong with her on the outside, but her training and personality still need to be evaluated. She was just in a bad situation,” said Humane Society Vice President Dede Barton.

Brietta was previously owned by an Iowa woman whose illness forced her to relinquish the horse after a home couldn’t be found for her.

Barton said the Waseca group heard of the woman’s plight, and some fellow horsewomen hitched up a horse trailer and left for Iowa.

The horse is staying with an experienced foster family in Mankato that has horses of its own. Barton said the immediate funding goal is to raise $550 to offset feed costs.

She said the horse, which hasn’t been to a veterinarian in two years, also requires updated vaccinations and foot-trimming.

Barton said the Waseca organization, headed by Nicki Blowers, had always envisioned branching out into rescue of barnyard animals, and Barton’s horse experience allowed it do so in this instance.

Barton said she has a degree in equine science and has worked in the Arabian horse industry 20 years.
