New Ulm police dog saved from budget ax

NEW ULM — The New Ulm Police Department's K-9 unit has been spared the budgetary ax.

The police dog program had been considered for elimination due to department budget issues. But Police Chief Myron Wieland said public and City Council response in favor of the program prompted the department to retain it.

Wieland said the department's mandated $30,000 in cuts this year will be dealt with through general cost reductions.

The dog, Juneau, is cared for by police investigator Jeremy Reed. The dog's tasks include sniffing for drugs and search assistance.

Wieland said the program will be reevaluated at year's end.
