MANKATO — After two years of fundraising, a memorial to honor all American veterans broke ground Wednesday in downtown Mankato. The Mankato area has specific monuments for veterans of World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War but none for military service in general, Veterans Memorial Place committee chairman Mel Roiger said. “Everything’s coming together but the money,” the former Marine said. “That’s always the last thing to come.” Organizers have raised about $60,000 of the memorial’s planned $150,000 cost. They say it’ll be a good place to come and reflect quietly. The city of Mankato donated the land, which sits near the intersection of Second Street and the Veterans Memorial Bridge.
