Snow creates commuting havoc in region

— Morning commutes were hairy Friday in southern Minnesota after 5 to 6 inches of snow blanketed the area overnight.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation described area roads as difficult. A number of school districts in the region closed for the day or delayed the start of classes. The Mankato and St. Peter districts began two hours late.

The State Patrol reported 124 crashes statewide as of Friday morning, including 23 with injuries and 119 spinouts or vehicles off the road. An Eagan woman, 24-year-old Taya N. Clifford, died in a weather-related crash Friday morning on Highway 13 in Eagan.

By noon Friday, snow in Mankato had stopped and patches of blue sky peeked through clouds as residents shoveled out and kids in snowpants took to their yards to play in the fresh snow.

Four hours later, flurries kicked in again with another half inch of snow expected.
