Locks of smiles

Loyola Catholic Schools eighth-grader Khia Warzecha has had long hair for a long time. She’s gotten used to the extra work involved with caring for the strands of wavy dark hair down to the middle of her back.

So it must have been a shock for some of her classmates when she showed up for class Thursday morning with shoulder-length hair after donating four 10-inch ponytails to Locks of Love at an event she organized.

Warzecha and 15 others donated more than 150 inches of hair to Locks of Love Wednesday, an organization that uses the hair to make wigs for financially disadvantaged children suffering from permanent hair loss. She came up with the idea of hosting a cut-a-thon in the Fitzgerald Middle School gym after deciding she wanted to have her hair cut, but also wanted to do some good with it.

Only a couple of people signed up in the school’s office to have their hair cut before the event, but walk-ins of all ages kept filing into the gym.

A pair of stylists donated their time to give the 16 long-haired ladies a new short hairstyle.
