Heroes saluted at game

Officers bring kids to see MoonDogs

MANKATO — When area law enforcement officers were asked if they wanted to participate in the Mankato MoonDogs amateur baseball team’s salute to heroes Wednesday, they said, “Sure.”

It wasn’t because they were looking for discounted tickets or appreciation for the job they do, however. Instead, they saw it as a way to show some kids a good time.

About 15 members of The Fraternal Order of Police South Central Lodge 16, which includes officers from throughout the region, brought about 20 kids to the game. They were joined by several police officers, who aren’t FOP members, from Mankato and Lake Crystal.

The MoonDogs helped out by supplying tickets for the kids, who wouldn’t usually get an opportunity to attend a game. And, as an added treat, the officers bought hot dogs and pop for their guests.

“Our FOP group has been interested in helping kids out, so this is a good opportunity to do that,” Trevor Kanewischer, Waseca County Sheriff’s Department detective and FOP president, said before the game. “I hope they have a fun night and it will lessen their fear of police officers, if they have those fears.”

The idea came from police officers with the Mankato Department of Public Safety, Kanewischer said. They asked if members of the lodge wanted to help out.

“We jumped at the chance,” he said.

Spider-Man was also at the game to help the MoonDogs recognize local heroes during their “Salute to Super Heroes, Salute to Every Day Heroes” event. Firefighters, law enforcement officers, emergency medical technicians and other emergency personnel were offered half-price tickets.

Kanewischer said he appreciates the recognition, but he doesn’t think law enforcement officers see themselves as heroes.

“I don’t think of it that way,” he said.
