Fundraising event adds tree delivery

NORTH MANKATO — Picking out a real Christmas tree can be fun, but, if you don’t own a pickup truck, getting those big balsam firs home is usually a challenge.

So those who aren’t fond of the white-knuckled drive home with a tree strapped to the roof or the hassle of vacuuming needles out of the back of their SUVs and minivans have another option. It’s being provided by the Miracle League of North Mankato during the Holiday By the River event Friday, 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Blue Valley Sod on River Drive.

When they sold trees during the event last year, which was started and hosted by Blue Valley Sod, people had a tough time pulling up to the sales area to get their firs and white pines, said Kaaren Keohane, Miracle League director. This year local Kiwanis members have offered to make deliveries during the week following the event.

A $5 charge for the deliveries will be donated to the Miracle League along with the profits for the tree sales. Kiwanis is providing the delivery truck and paying for the gas.

“We’re thinking it might be more appealing for people,” Keohane said.

She’s also hoping the annual event, which ends with a 6:30 p.m. fireworks display, will have people in the mood to buy trees. After a day of Black Friday shopping, the gathering gives families a chance to really get into the holiday spirit by having fun while donating to area charities.

Some of the events highlights include a chili supper, pictures with Santa, horse-drawn trolley and carriage rides, entertainment for children and, new this year, a live nativity scene.

“Last year we had more than 1,000 people,” said Madge Toland, Blue Valley Sod office manager. “We’re hoping to have more this year. It’s very much a family deal, and it’s for a good cause.”

Those who attend are being asked to bring an unwrapped toy, non-perishable food, clothing or cash donations. Everything donated will benefit the Salvation Army, Santa Anonymous, the Miracle League and MRCI.

Bob Weertz, owner of Blue Valley Sod, decided to start the event to give himself and others an avenue for giving back to the community, Toland said. There are several sponsors, including the neighboring New Creation Church, that have joined the effort.

“They’ve been very kind to all our organizations,” Keohane said. “It’s just a great family event and a fun way to kick off the holiday season.”
