Waseca Mayor Roy Srp has announched he will run as an Independence Party candidate for Minnesota Senate District 26 in the special election scheduled for Jan. 26.
Former Congressman Tim Penny, Independence Party candidate for governor in 2002, said in a written statement, “I am confident that Srp’s leadership and ability for compromise will help get results in the Legislature."
Srp has caucused with both Democrats and Republicans in the past. "What I find so disheartening in the political arena, is that although the other major parties may have excellent ideas their ideologies prevent them from getting things done." Srp said in a written statement. "Balancing a budget is simple, common sense. You can't spend more than you take in. The State Legislature should be held to the same accountability. As an Independent, I've proven it can be done."
By Party constitution, neither Srp as an IP candidate, nor the party itself, accepts any contributions from corporations, labor unions, or political action committees.
Srp served on the Waseca County Board of commissioners for two years, the Waseca City Council for nine years, and has been Mayor of Waseca for five years. Srp ran unopposed in 2008 for his third term as mayor.
