MANKATO —
The U.S. Postal Service mail processing facility on Mankato’s north side — and the 102 jobs it provides — may be history in as few as eight months.
Postal Service officials have announced a study is under way to determine if shutting the Mankato Processing and Distribution Facility and transferring the work to the USPS processing center in Minneapolis would save money without substantially reducing customer service.
A pair of questions are at the heart of the study, said Peter Nowacki, a spokesman for the USPS in Minneapolis.
“Can we do this and still maintain service? And what kind of cost savings could we see by making a move?” Nowacki said of the study, which he expects to be completed within 60 days.
A review by The Free Press of dozens of similar studies of processing centers across the country shows that bad news is almost certainly coming for the workers in the Mankato facility.
