No high-def Vikings for DirecTV customers

MANKATO — Mankato area DirecTV customers won’t be watching the Vikings opener Sunday in high definition.

It’s an issue that caused complaints from the satellite customers starting last fall and negotiations to remedy the situation are still ongoing.

Before last September, DirecTV used the affiliate KMSP for its Fox channel.

But the trend has been moving toward going with local affiliate stations, so DirecTV switched to Mankato’s Fox affiliate, which broadcasts on channel 13 for satellite customers. Fox 13 does not broadcast in HD.

Denny Wahlstrom, vice president and general manager of KEYC-TV, which also operates the local Fox affiliate, said the station is still in negotiations with DirectTV.

“The cost of delivering high definition is the issue. It would cost somebody money to deliver the signal,” Wahlstrom said.

“We’re still working with DirecTV. It’s actively being discussed. We just haven’t reached a decision yet.”

He said that although the service is delivered by DirecTV, fans watching the games in standard definition take their ire out on the North Mankato-based station.

“We get the phone calls.”
