LAKE CRYSTAL — Jennifer Nibbe told dispatchers her husband had been shot in the head by an intruder, according to transcripts of her 911 call that reported the shooting just before 6 a.m. Tuesday.

James Mervin Nibbe, 26, was found dead in his home south of Lake Crystal when Sheriff Brad Peterson arrived about 15 minutes after Jennifer Nibbe made the emergency call.

Peterson was the first person to arrive at the scene.

Peterson has released little information about the incident and what investigators suspect happened, saying it could compromise their investigation. No one is in custody and investigators have said they believe the shooting was isolated and there is no risk to public safety.

Nibbe’s initial call to 911 described a scene involving an intruder who also attacked her. She reported her husband had been shot with a shotgun the family kept up against a door in the house.

“Oh my God, please help us, please help us,” Nibbe said when the 911 dispatcher answered. “Somebody’s here.”

“What’s going on?” the dispatcher asked.

“Somebody shot my husband,” Nibbe said. “Please, (inaudible) can, he left and don’t know if he’s coming back.”

“He left. He had me pinned down on the ground in the living room and then he got up and left and the dog was barking. He let, must have let the dog outside. I was up for, for work and I let the dog out. I, oh God, Yukon get in here.”

At that point, the dispatcher asked if there was anyone else in the house with her.

“My son is,” Nibbe responded. “Oh my God, my teenage son is.”

Neighbors have said Nibbe lived at the house with her husband and her son, Brady Brown. During the 911 call, Nibbe told dispatchers her son is 16 years old. She eventually found him and his voice also can be heard in the 911 call.

He asked his mother if someone was in the house and if she was okay.

“I’m okay,” she said while crying, according to the transcript. “He cut me, but I don’t know. . .”

“He shot you?” the boy asked.

“He cut me I think,” Nibbe answered. “I don’t know.”

At that point, her son seems to lose control. She attempted to calm him and have him sit down. She then explained that she was on the phone with a 911 dispatcher.

When the dispatcher asked what the intruder looked like, Nibbe described him as being her height with nylon “or something” over his head. She said he was wearing a black, hooded sweatshirt.

She told the dispatcher she was a nurse and an emergency responder, but she didn’t know what to do for her husband. The dispatcher eventually asked if James was still breathing.

“No, no,” she said. “It looks like the back of his head is gone.”
